About Our Story

A Resting Place Built by the Community, for the Community

Dixons Union Cemetery, formerly Dixons Primitive Methodist Cemetery, has been a place of remembrance and community heritage since its establishment in 1875. Nestled along Kennedy Road, between Mayfield Road and Old School Road in the Town of Caledon, the cemetery is surrounded by rural charm and local history.

The earliest recorded burials date back to 1849, for Hugh C. Dinsmore, aged two years, and his cousin Henry Dinsmore, aged eight months - both passing on February 3 of that year. These early burials reflect the deep roots of the surrounding community.

At the north end of the property once stood the Dixons Primitive Methodist Church, the second church constructed on this site. The original building was destroyed by a windstorm in 1874, and when the new church was built, its floor was raised, and the foundations were reinforced to include an underground vault. This vault served a practical purpose in the days before winter burials were possible—it was used to store the deceased during the colder months until the ground thawed.

Today, the church stands as a historic landmark and is used exclusively for the annual memorial service, held on the second Sunday in September. This service, led by a local minister, Band, and Cemetery Executives pays tribute to community members who have passed in the preceding year.

The cemetery, located on the south side of the church, remains active, with a limited number of plots still available for purchase. In 1945, the conference officially approved the change of name to Dixons Union Cemetery. A cemetery meeting is held annually on the second Monday in June to discuss the ongoing prosperity of the Cemetery and its operations.

Historically, burials took place year-round, but today they are typically held from May through November.

Over the years, significant care has gone into maintaining both the church and the grounds. The continued excellent condition of the church and cemetery is a testament to the commitment of the executive, directors, and caretakers who have worked tirelessly to preserve this historic site for future generations
